Mount Eden & Auckland Botanical Gardens

Three things on our agenda on Saturday. So much going on I think I'll split up into different blog enteries, not to confuse matters... today we went

1) Up Mount Eden & to Auckland Botanical Gardens
2) Monster Truck racing at Waikaraka park

Right, first stop (again via a little detour resulting from non existent navigational skills) was the top of Mount Eden – one of the tallest volcanoes in Auckland (we opted to drive up this one). After a stroll round the crater and an "ooh" and an "ahhh" at the view we drove on again to the botanical gardens just south of Auckland.

Mount Eden, Auckland

Previously we told the boys we had a treat for them, so when they got out the car you should have seen the look of sheer disappointment on their faces… little man in particular! He was not a happy bunny but that was soon rectified by our picnic and ice cream… food, particularly ice cream, solves a lot when he is concerned. First we took a quick 20 minute ride on a little train/ cart thingy round the gardens which was really informative as it gave a brief overview and explanation of all its different gardens.

Auckland Botanical Gardens are relatively new in gardening terms, however what they have done was excellent. It’s on a much much smaller scale than the ones back home such as RHS Whisley but lovely none the less. Their plan was to showcase all the plants from around the world that do well in the Auckland climate… and they had a number of different sections… as you walked round the lake… an edible garden, rose garden, African theme etc, but the one I loved the most was the children’s garden otherwise known as 'The Potting Shed'. It was massive and very interactive for the children, having a mosaic sundial, a dry cactus section (questionable how touchy feely/ kiddy safe this part was), a jungle, meadow, a roof top garden and even a bog area with the most humongous tadpoles I’d ever seen. There was another garden which was churning out weddings, one after another, and during our tour of the garden there were a number of wedding parties tottering around in their dresses, high heals and hot suits in the heat having their photos taken.
